A lot of different things! You should think about the rest of this page (and the rest of this masterdoc) as a default, as our vision of what a forecasting club can look like; please feel empowered to change stuff around, do things differently, etc. We encourage you to experiment — you’re the experts on your club.

What does a forecasting club do?

Sorta like what you’d imagine a basketball team doing for basketball, or a debate team doing for debate… but for forecasting!

• mostly, practice — drills, training, working through examples, calibration, etc
• talks or lectures on a particular subtopic
• scrimmages/practice tournaments with other clubs
• competing the regional OPTIC tournaments
• working on projects within the forecasting community
• social events

Some examples of specific events:

• practice sessions (e.g. calibration training, weekly updating sessions for a Metaculus Quarterly Cup)
• forecasting workshops
• speaker events with experts in fields ranging from statistics to economics to biology to finance and more
• group trips (e.g. to Manifest or OPTIC)
• game nights & other events just for fun
• reading groups (e.g. book clubs on Superforecasting, The Signal and the Noise, Expert Political Judgement, etc)

Who participates?

Mostly students, although sometimes professors participate too. Members will likely be both numerate and engaged in the world. We often find the students who like forecasting most are majoring in some of the following areas:
